John C. Huang, Ph.D., PE & George Thomas, PE This course provides methods for evaluating the lateral resistance of individual subassemblies of the LFRS (i.e., shear walls and diaphragms) and the response of the whole building to lateral loads (i.e., load distribution). Traditional design approaches as well as innovative methods, such as the perforated shear wall design method, are integrated within this course. While the code-approved methods have generally worked, there is considerable opportunity for improvement and optimization. The information and design examples presented at the end of this course provide a useful guide and resource that supplement existing building code provisions. Also, this course fosters a better understanding of the role of analysis versus judgment and in promoting a more efficient design. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public. NY Board does not accept courses related to office management, risk management, leadership, marketing, accounting, financial planning, real estate, and basic CAD.
