The Investigation and Rehabilitation of Constructed Buildings and Structures: Introduction to Structural Investigations

Matthew Stuart, PE, SE

This course is the first learning unit associated with the broad topic of the investigation and rehabilitation of constructed buildings and structures. This first course begins with a discussion of structural investigations because you cannot repair and rehabilitate any building properly without first thoroughly investigating and understanding the condition of the structure. In fact, a lack of understanding of the condition or type of structure will always result in the wrong approach to repairs, which can actually cause accelerated deterioration, or a more costly approach to rehabilitation. This course will assist the attendee with learning how to avoid this same pitfall when renovating or repairing a structure.

This course will highlight that the repair and rehabilitation of a structure is not only required because it is a critical piece of infrastructure that has to be maintained, but also, more often than not, repairs and rehabilitations are associated with the renovation, upgrade, alteration or adaptive reuse of a facility.

This course also includes a discussion of load carrying investigations because typically with deterioration investigations it is still necessary to determine what the remaining load carrying capacity is of a compromised, damaged or deteriorated structure. This is because more often than not the owner of the deteriorated facility has limited funds and must live with a downgraded facility, as long as it is safe, until funds are available to make the necessary repairs.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
