Ruben A. Gomez, PE Traditionally engineers are trained to analyze their structures based on accepted procedures, determine the stresses induced by real or imaginary loads and then rigidly attach so conceived structures to the crust of the immutable Mother Earth. Unfortunately, our Earth is a planet in constant movement and its crust goes through constant changes and readjustments, thus affecting all things we place on or in its crust. Consequently, we engineers need to stop looking at our buildings and bridges as inanimate objects and begin accepting them for what they are, machines in disguise. In this course we will review that aspect of the design procedure, where buildings and bridges acquire the ability to move and adjust, by adding dampers, rollers, hinges and rotulas that allow and control the necessary motions to allow them survive seismic displacements as natural byproducts of Mother EarthÂ’s own adjustments for survival. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public. NY Board does not accept courses related to office management, risk management, leadership, marketing, accounting, financial planning, real estate, and basic CAD. Specific course topics that are on the borderline and are not acceptable by the NY Board have been noted under the course description on our website. |
