Helen Chen, Ph.D., PE Licensed professionals such as engineers and land surveyors hold a privileged position within society, with a unique responsibility for public health, safety, and welfare. Accordingly, the services provided by professional engineers and land surveyors require honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity. This course presents an overview of the professional codes of ethics for engineers and land surveyors, discusses their responsibility to society, describes the professional misconducts associated with the design profession, and provides a list of nine steps to ethical engineering decisions. In addition, this course defines three types of conflicts of interest and suggests six rules of thumb to help engineers eliminate or minimize conflicts of interest in their professional practice. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials. This course is designed to help you meet the ethics training requirement for the following states: Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin.
