Ken Kniss, PE; Michael McNicholas, PE; Chelsea Riddle This presentation explores commonly proposed value engineering alternatives for deep foundation systems, with a focus on VibroPiers, Rigid Inclusions, and single-pass drilling techniques. These ground improvement and deep foundation technologies are often considered for similar project types; however, selecting the most appropriate method requires a clear understanding of the site conditions, performance requirements, and design constraints. Attendees will gain a foundational understanding of each technology, including their construction methodologies and typical applications. The course will also provide a technical overview of the design approaches used for each system, supported by project case studies that illustrate how and when each method serves as the optimal value engineering solution. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped to make more informed decisions when evaluating alternative deep foundation options in both design and construction phases.
