Dennis Boehm and Brian J. Freilich, Ph.D., PE Providing adequate foundation support is an ever increasing challenge as many project sites are located over less than favorable subsurface conditions. Typically, rigid type solutions comprised of deep foundation elements are often selected as a conservative foundation solution, regardless of the other available solutions, to mitigate risks associated with high bearing loads and strict settlement tolerances. However, Ground Improvement (GI) foundation solutions offer a cost-effective and schedule friendly alternative that utilize sophisticated design methods and real time QA/QC methods to provide suitable performance. These GI solutions, coupled with other Site Improvement solutions, have been used to provide the foundation solution required for many of the schedule driven projects around the world. This presentation will provide a background for understanding the GI support options available as well as a few case histories to showcase their use to mitigate various geotechnical challenges. Keller North America provides a wide range of geotechnical engineering and construction services to improve soils in place and to both construct new and rehabilitate foundations. The techniques that will be discussed include Compaction & Jet Grouting, Earth Retention and Shoring, Vibro Compaction & Replacement, Micropiles, Soil Mixing for Deep Basement Excavations, and Pile Driving. Within our range of services, a Ground Modification solution is generally available for the toughest subsurface conditions.
