Cast Irons: Types, Properties, Applications & Weldability

Semih Genculu, P.E.

Iron castings are produced with a wide range of properties. Cast iron is a generic term that designates a family of metals. To achieve the best casting for a particular application at the lowest cost consistent with the component’s requirements, it is necessary to have an understanding of the types of cast iron. Cast iron (CI) is one of the oldest materials in commercial use. It has excellent compressive strength and is commonly used for structures that require this property, as well as for water and sewer lines. This course explains CI metallurgy and why the understanding of this metallurgy is key to understanding their properties and limitations in certain applications.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
