A clean room is an area or space in which particulate contamination is controlled within specific levels.
The greatest contributor is particulate contamination. Construction, temperature, humidity, air flow patterns and pressure are controlled in such a manner as to minimize the introduction, generation and retention of particles (such as dust) inside the room. These rooms are used in scientific research, medical, pharmaceutical and high technology manufacturing industries, where product/sample quality and employee wellbeing are critical.
Clean rooms are not new. They have continuously evolved over the years and have been manufactured and used since the early space program. It was found that dust from a normal environment could cause critical devices to fail in space. Clean room historians say the concept of contamination control originated as early as the mid-19th century in hospital operating rooms. Modern clean rooms, however, were born out of the need for precision manufacturing in clean environments during World War II and the subsequent race to space.
This course explores the need, design, construction, operation and standards for modern clean rooms.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
