This course brings the fundamentals of Biodiesel Production & Processes in a didactic form, suited for everyone, beginners, students, technicians, engineers, contractors and all interested professionals, working or not, with sustainable energy, refineries, oil & gas. The concepts of this course are divided in 12 basic sections as follows: Introduction, Biofuels, Biodiesel History, Crude Oil Refinery, Oil Refineries History, Fundamentals of Biodiesel, Biodiesel Engine Operation, BQ-9000 Biodiesel Program, Biodiesel Application, Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Glossary, properly illustrated and distributed in 70 pages.
Currently, biodiesel is commonly applied in any diesel engine when mixed with mineral diesel and is the most common biofuel in Europe, Brazil, India, and nowadays in USA. In 2010, worldwide biofuel production reached 105 billion liters (28 billion gallons US), up 17% from 2009, and biofuels provided 2.7% of the world's fuels for road transport. Generally, biofuels and renewable energy efforts minimize the production of middle distillates (jet fuel, kerosene, home heating oil and diesel fuel) and lighter products (liquid petroleum gases (LPG), naphtha, and gasoline) that are highly pollutants.
Biofuels are gaining increased public and scientific attention, driven by factors such as oil price hikes, the need for increased energy security, concern over greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, and support from government subsidies. Biofuel is considered carbon neutral, as the biomass absorbs roughly the same amount of carbon dioxide during growth, as when burnt. Although fossil fuels have their origin in ancient carbon fixation, they are not considered biofuels by the generally accepted definition because they contain carbon that has been "out" of the carbon cycle for a very long time.
