Flywheel Energy Storage

Steven G. Liescheidt, P.E., CCS, CCPR

Flywheels have been around for thousands of years. The earliest application is likely the potter’s wheel. Perhaps the most common application in more recent times has been in internal combustion engines. A flywheel is a simple form of mechanical energy storage. Energy is stored by causing a disk or rotor to spin on its axis. Stored energy is proportional to the flywheel’s mass and the square of its rotational speed.

This course is based on the document Federal Technology Alert – Flywheel Energy Storage; DOE/EE-0286, September 2003.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
