A. Bhatia, B.E. Natural ventilation refers to the process of exchanging warm building air for cooler outside air without the use of energy-consuming mechanical devices, such as fans and air conditioners. Natural ventilation is one of the simplest and inexpensive methods to provide occupants with refreshing outside air. It is not always as simple as just providing multiple operable windows in a building. Wind patterns specific to the site and the building design and its arrangement play a vital role. In addition when ventilating a building using natural ventilation, two distinct design strategies must be considered - one for the winter and one for the summer. This 3-hour course provides an overview of the fundamentals of natural ventilation and infiltration. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
