Donald Brocksmith, P.E. This topic is directed toward the engineer who needs a simple but practical means of calculating vapor-liquid equilibrium composition. It will give the engineer a better understanding of the relationship between the vapor and liquid phases at equilibrium. These concepts can be applied to many industrial operations like distillation, gas absorption, bubble point and dew point calculations, and calculating vapor space compositions in storage tanks. The course does not go through the theoretical derivations or proofs for the equilibrium, but focuses on the practical application of the equations to describe vapor-liquid equilibrium. The course does develop Raoults Law from basic equilibrium concepts. This topic is a basic refresher course on vapor-liquid equilibrium. The course describes methods to calculate the composition of the vapor space in storage tanks, which is useful in determining emissions and in calculating the amount of pad gas required to keep the vapor space out of the explosive range. The course also gives a refresher in calculating the bubble point and dew point temperatures and pressures of a system. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
