In 1970, the United States Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and President Richard Nixon signed it into law on December 29, 1970. Its primary goal was to ensure that employers provide employees with a work environment free from known hazards. Upon the passage of the Act, the following groups formed: the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This course will cover the most prevalent but also most preventable workplace hazards. The sources of endangerment can be classified into 6 categories: confined spaces, falls, electrical power, trenching and excavation, communication towers, and cranes and derricks. Each category will have an overview, a description of the standards, and then a real-world case study exemplifying the standards. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
