This 5-hour course describes the potential environmental issues surrounding high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission lines. The course explains the factors that are created by the operation of a HVDC line and then reviews research on how the factors influence humans, animals, and vegetation. Several case studies are presented. Overall, the prevailing view is that there is little, if any, environmental hazards association with the operation of HVDC lines. However, public perception of large power lines continues to be and issue and environmental concerns are always raised when new lines are planned.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
