Jurandir Primo, P.E. This course is a general introduction, of the most common installations and new developments of Hydroelectric Power Potentials River & Marine Systems. Hydropower or water power (from the Greek hydra, "water") is power derived from the energy of falling water or fast running water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes. Since ancient times, hydropower from many kinds of watermills has been used as a renewable energy source for irrigation and the operation of various mechanical devices, such as, sawmills, textile mills, domestic lifts, grinding seeds, etc. Renewable energy sources, such as, hydro, solar, wind, tidal, sea wave, biomass, and geothermal have become significant sectors of the energy market. The size, service, and general requirements of an installation will usually determine which items are necessary for conventional or marine hydroelectic power: water supply systems, unwatering systems, compressed air systems, turbine governing equipment, flow meters, water level transmitters, recorders, elevators, main generator equipment, station power generating units, station service transformers, main unit control boards, maintenance shop equipment, generator neutral grounding equipment and so on. The arrangement and dimensions of the civil, mechanic and electric installations are determined by the physical requirements of the turbines and generators components. Exterior design should be considered throughout the design process. In general, the design should receive most attention, as the general arrangement of the powerhouse including floor, water surface and penstock elevations. It should utilize scale, proportion, rhythm, and composition to achieve an aesthetically pleasing structure which fits in with its natural surroundings. In achieving these ends economy is important, and, although decoration and complexity are not to be ruled out, simplicity should be the keynote. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public.
