D.L. Peterson, P.E. While most roadways are constructed of pavements (asphalt or concrete), there are still about 2.2 million miles of roadways in the US constructed with aggregate surfaces and they represent over 50% of the total roadway length. The focus of design for aggregate surfacing is a stable foundation. The chief failure mode of an aggregate on existing subgrade is bearing capacity. The failure is commonly seen as punching or rutting failure. This course addresses appropriate design of aggregate surfaces, including those for unpaved roads, heavy-use areas, trails and walkways for animals and stream crossings. It also includes design for subgrade stabilization. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
