A significant challenge to the design and construction of foundations in and on rock masses is the difficulty in obtaining the required properties. Rock mass consists of rock material along with its weaknesses such as joints, fissures etc. Another challenge is that the determination of the required quality of rock mass which varies significantly within a medium. To aid in this determination, Hoek and Brown developed a parameter called Geological Strength Index (GSI) for determining rock mass quality quantitatively and qualitatively. This course focusses on the design and construction of shallow and deep foundations in and on rock masses using GSI. Concepts and application s of GSI are presented with solved problems.
