Inlet Capacity and Pavement Drainage

D.L. Peterson, P.E.

One of the components of a storm sewer system that is often overlooked is the inlet. A storm sewer system typically contains as many as four or more inlets at every street intersection but it is not uncommon for the designer to assume the inlet intercepts all of the water that reaches it, regardless of the geometry of the inlet or the geometry of the site. Failure to properly analyze inlet capacity can result in a storm sewer system that does not have adequate capacity because the runoff is not conveyed into the piping system. This course will cover the basic calculations involved in design of storm drain inlets and include the basic guidelines necessary to use the inlet calculator included in the FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
