Microplastics are tiny particles currently receiving considerable attention in both the scientific and lay communities, because of their ubiquitousness and their potential as environmental contaminants. Although some microplastics are found within products designed for consumption, the vast majority are formed due to the degradation of plastics. Microplastics can take several forms, depending on their sources. It is important to understand the sources of microplastics, and how they form within the lifecycle of plastic production, to be able to better identify ways to reduce or eliminate their impact on the environment. This course will provide the project manager with a basic understanding of the types of microplastics, their lifecycle in the environment and the challenges posed due to the evolving state of microplastics science.
