Rock Fall Hazard Mitigation

Dorairaja Raghu, Ph.D., P.E.

This course provides engineers and geologists with guidance on the techniques and procedures of rock hazard mitigation for surface structures in civil engineering works. The course materials are based entirely on the Caltrans Geotechnical Design Manual entitled” Rock Fall”. The manual commences with a description of the rockfall types and causes, followed by a presentation of rockfall hazard rating systems. Rockfall risk assessment and risk management is discussed. Then the site investigation along with instrumentation and monitoring required for rockfall hazard mitigation is presented. The next sections discuss rockfall mechanics and rockfall analysis along with the selection for mitigation. This is followed by discussions on rockfall maintenance and management programs and reporting. The manual concludes with the presentation of a sample rockfall storm damage evaluation form.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
