A Guide to Composting Toilet Construction

D. Allen Hughes, PE

Composting toilet (CT) technology provides many advantages over pit, VIP, water-sealed toilets, and septic systems. One of their largest advantages is that they can be built anywhere, and usually for not very much up-front cost, making them excellent choices in rural or remote areas.

Materials used for the construction of CTs can vary based on the location of the structure as well as the proximity to shops that many contain the necessary materials. Materials used for constructing the toilet house on top of the chambers will differ from site to site. The CT design in this course was adapted from a toilet used in Tonga, Kiribati, and Fiji.

The scope of this course is to serve as a primer in the uses of CTs and how to build the, including a step-by-step instruction manual. It is intended to serve as a first step in understanding the best practices by which to construct CTs and what benefits they can offer over other methods of waste disposal.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
