Ruben A. Gomez, PE Concrete slab cracks are (or at least they should be) a source of embarrassment to any engineer or architect who has participated in the design of ground slabs. Those who do not seem to be concerned are the result of indoctrination under the false predicament that cracks belong in concrete and use such an excuse to escape the responsibility. The reality is that cracks can be avoided in their entirety. It may take a lot of hard work and observation in learning why those cracks take place and what it can be done to preclude their development. Further, it may also take long hours in anticipating and detailing the preventive procedures, but the results would be highly rewarding. Concrete is the greatest construction material ever developed by the human mind and the least we engineers can do is to effectively learn how to use it to its maximum advantage and potential. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public.
