Mark P. Rossow, Ph.D, PE Retired The construction of a bridge generally constitutes a significant cost in the operation of a transportation system. This cost can be avoided or at least delayed for many years by extending the bridge service life through a carefully planned program of maintenance and repair. This course describes such a program. First, maintenance and repair tasks common to most types of bridges such as cleaning deck drains, bank restoration, scour protection, debris and snow and ice removal are discussed. Then, maintenance and repair tasks particular to specific bridge types, such as bridges made of steel, concrete, timber, wrought and cast iron, are considered. In addition to discussing maintenance and repair, the course describes procedures for upgrades that expand bridge load-carrying capacity. The course would be especially suitable as a training course for consulting firms and government agencies responsible for bridge maintenance. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public.
