Mark P. Rossow, Ph.D, PE Retired A key component of any bridge maintenance and repair plan is a carefully thought-out program of bridge inspection. This course, after reviewing various bridge components in depth, provides a thorough discussion of bridge inspection procedures. The course would be especially suitable as a training course for consulting firms and government agencies responsible for bridge maintenance. Almost all types of bridges except suspension bridges are considered. The procedures discussed vary with the type of material of which the bridge is composed and with the particular components of the bridge. Examples include bridges made of steel, concrete, timber, wrought and cast iron, and masonry, and components such as abutments, piers and bents, concrete beams and girders, floor systems, trusses, bearings, and decks. Related issues such as soils and waterways are also included, as are considerations of inspector safety, recommended inspection tools, and documentation. The course is entirely based on Chapters 1-9 of the manual Joint Departments of the Army and Air Force, TM 5-600/AFJPAM 32-1088, Bridge Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair, released in December, 1994. This course includes a multiple choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public. NY Board does not accept courses related to office management, risk management, leadership, marketing, accounting, financial planning, real estate, and basic CAD.
