John C. Huang, Ph.D., PE Originated from Canada in the 1960s, Geographic Information System (GIS) is a multi-faceted discipline that incorporates a variety of concepts and technologies. It is a powerful tool in decision-making, as it allows us to view, understand, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that have never been achieved before. To really understand the capabilities of GIS, you need to learn cartography, spatial and statistical analysis, database management, and programming. This course introduces students to the history of GIS development and the basic GIS concepts such as layers, data formats, and data analysis methods. In addition, students will learn some of the common applications of GIS and the popular GIS software. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public. NY Board does not accept courses related to office management, risk management, leadership, marketing, accounting, financial planning, real estate, and basic CAD.
