Huang, Ph.D., PE Originating in Canada in the 1960s, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have evolved into a multifaceted discipline that integrates cartography, spatial and statistical analysis, database management, and programming. GIS is a powerful decision-making tool that enables users to view, analyze, interpret, and visualize data in ways that were previously unattainable. This course provides an introduction to the development and foundational concepts of GIS, including layers, data formats, and data analysis methods. Students will also explore common applications of GIS and review the major software platforms currently used in the field.
